Voices of Recovery: Amber’s Recovery Story

Amber grew up watching her father struggle with addiction. Today, over 18 months into recovery, she's present for her kids. This is her recovery story.

Amber’s Recovery Story: From Hopeless to Grateful

How Addiction Started

Amber’s recovery story begins with a question she carried through her whole childhood. “My dad was an addict, and I just always wondered why he chose drugs over his kids,” she says. “So I wanted to know why. And then I did them, and I figured out it wasn’t a choice.”

The Turning Point

The change came when she woke up in a jail cell, having lost her kids, her house, and her job. “I could have walked out the door and used,” Amber says, “but something just told me that I just wasn’t going to get better if I did that.”

Finding Recovery and Healing

At Westminster Homes of Lehigh Valley Recovery House, she found a community that gave her room to make mistakes and grow at her own pace. “They let me work my mess out,” she says.

Now over 18 months into recovery, Amber is present for her children and her community — and she has a message for anyone still searching for their path: “Recovery is not a little box that you just fit yourself into. Recovery can be anything that you choose to insert into your life to help you get better.”
