Rise Above
Connecting Communities & Saving Lives in Lehigh County
The heroin and opioid epidemic is the number one public health and public safety challenge facing Pennsylvania.
It is primarily fueled by fentanyl, counterfeit pills, and other synthetic opioids.
Of the 146 overdose deaths in Lehigh County in 2023, 83.6% were opioid related and 78.1% involved fentanyl.
Everyone in Lehigh County is potentially impacted by this epidemic.

The goal of this website is to provide families, individuals and organizations across Lehigh County with increased awareness of the opioid epidemic, and guidelines and resources to assist in prevention and recovery efforts.
Opioids are a class of drugs that include synthetic opioids such as fentanyl; pain relievers available legally by prescription, such as oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, morphine; the illegal drug heroin; and many others.
Fentanyl is a potent, fast-acting opioid that’s 50-100 times as strong as morphine. It is a growing contributor to the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania.
The vast majority of overdose deaths in recent years involved illicitly manufactured fentanyl and other potent, synthetic opioids, which may be added to other drugs and consumed unknowingly.
Naloxone, commonly referred to by the brand name Narcan®, is medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. Narcan is safe, easy to use and lifesaving. It is available without a prescription in PA.
Addiction is a treatable, chronic medical disease that can affect the entire family. But addiction is treatable and prevention can be successful.
Opioid use among teens and young adults is not just a “city” problem. Once concentrated in cities, opioids are now widely used (and misused) by urban, suburban, and rural people.
